Tips on Chlorine levels, Chlorine Odor, and Saltwater

Desired Chlorine Levels

There are a number of different types of chlorine; granular (stabilised and un-stabilised), liquid, tablet, and the most popular of all, SALTWATER CHLORINATION. Regardless of the type of chlorination used, you should always maintain a minimum level of
1.0 - 2.0 ppm (parts per million). Hotter climates may require a higher chlorine residual.

Chlorine Odour

Many people complain about the smell of chlorine and believe that the chlorine level in their pool is too high. In fact, not having enough chlorine in the pool will result in the chlorine smell and lead to users suffering with sore eyes and itchy skin. This is the cause of a chlorination by-product "chloramines". These are the smelly culprits that cause all the problems. To get rid of them, we need to add more chlorine. This process is called SUPERCHLORINATION.

Saltwater Chlorination

Saltwater chlorination is the most popular means of sanitising your pool with chlorine using the process of electrolysis. This is achieved by passing salt water through an electrolytic cell which converts sodium chloride (salt) in the water into chlorine gas. When dissolved in pool water, the gas becomes sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine). This process allows us to produce our own chlorine to sanitise the pool without using up or diluting salt levels. Salt will only need to be added to the pool due to water loss or the adding of fresh water caused by rain or water level top-ups.
